About us
Our team is headed up by Dr Jonathan Foley, an established landscape designer, author and lecturer of over 40 years experience that is passionate about using a rich palette of plants across a wide range of projects including residential, corporate, institutional and community contexts.
Associates within our team includes designers and conservation experts who have a firm grasp of the challenges facing responsible development within the green industry.
Quick Bio
Jonathan qualified as a horticulturist and landscaper from Technikon Natal with a National Higher Diploma in Horticulture (1988) and studied part time at the University of Natal Pietermaritzburg (CEAD) Centre for Environment and Development graduating with an Advanced Post Graduate Certificate in Environment and Development. Following on his passion for conservation he completed a Master’s degree from Durban University of Technology in 2011, focusing on the biodiversity and flora of Shongweni Reserve. A doctoral degree in biodiversity and science communication was awarded from the University of KwaZulu-Natal in 2017.

Jonathan has worked within the landscape industry in various roles for close to forty years. This included institutional work as a Senior Horticulturist with the Natal Provincial Administration developing landscapes at Edgewood College and other facilities as well as managing a maintenance depot and growing nursery. Commercial projects followed including residential clients as well as corporates such as Eskom, SAPPI Fine and Tongaat- Huletts

A teaching opportunity opened up at Technikon Natal (now DUT) and he was able to train young people in horticultural and landscape techniques equipping them for the landscape and nursery industry. As a Senior Lecturer and former Head of Horticulture Department at the Durban University of Technology for many years he was able to initiate a School of Horticulture for the learners, a hands-on teaching platform where learners were able to engage the head, heart and hands teaching model.

Interaction with industry players such as SANBI (South African Biodiversity Institute) led to the development of part time courses for the “Greening the Nation” program as well as other practical horticultural training programs for the SANBI National Gardens throughout the country. Other collaborations included training partnerships with the Durban Botanic Gardens, the creation of learning material for SALI (South African Landscape Institute) and the development of a new national landscaping curriculum and learning material for SAGIC (South African Green Industry Council).

This combined collective and cumulative experience provides an invaluable depth of knowledge that he is able to bring to each project.
