Jonathan has been involved in Higher Education for the last 30 years helping young people graduate from the Durban University of Technology as professionals in Horticulture and Landscaping at NQF levels 6 and 7. He was also involved with multiple training collaborations with the following national clients:

Greening the Nation initiative for SANBI (South African Biodiversity Institute)

Groen Sebenza training in plant identification and landscape gardening techniques at Natal Herbarium

Training garden workers and landscape supervisors for the National Gardens on location at Kirstenbosch , Mbombela and Umsindusi

Developing curricula, learning material and training for SALI (South African Landscape Institute)

Developing curricula and learning material for two brand new qualifications in Garden Design and Landscape design at NQF level 4 and 5 for the GIC (Green Industries Council). These have been fully accredited by AGRISETA and will be rolled out soon.

Landscape Academy Courses 2025
A range of professional training is offered to empower workers, ,supervisors and managers within the Landscape Industry dealing with practical real life contexts. Stand alone modules are aligned with AGRISETA unit standards where applicable. An outcomes based learning format is used with clearly defined goals. Course material has been endorsed by industry experts from SALI and certificates of attendance are issued. Currently available courses are listed below. Custom made courses can be designed to meet individual needs. Formal accreditation with QCTO (Quality Control Trades and Organisations) is pending.

Plant identification -. These modules include the practical identification of Trees and Shrubs, Climbers/ Creepers, Perennials/ Groundcovers and bulbous plants.
The focus is on recognising and understanding plant signatures and characteristics and using appropriate species in the landscape. Both indigenous and exotic species are used in the selection of plant palettes.

Invasive alien plant (IAP) identification and control - Focusing on plant recognition, life cycles and selection of appropriate contols.
Invasive alien plant (IAP) management course - Focusing on the mapping of infestations and the development and costing of suitable control programs.
